Artistic Director's Message

Welcome to our 2008 season – four new plays from Canada’s rural routes.

For centuries, people have been hungry for good stories, songs and pictures. It is the search for good art that makes us human in the first place. While debating with a friend about modern art versus the classics, I was struck by a question that he posed: “Does the painting make you stop and think?” He went on, “If so, then it expands your world. That’s good art.”

The Blyth Festival produces good art. Always accessible, always thought provoking, always a genuine Huron County experience, a play in Blyth Memorial Hall makes you realize that Canadian culture is alive and well. What’s more, it is an event that can bring tears of laughter or compassion to your eyes.

In 2008 we are telling our rural stories with our trademark energy and passion. And although the stories are all new to our stage, you will recognize the characters as soon as you meet them. For these are the people that you have known all your life – the local hero, the whispering gossip, the wise village elder, and the shifty-eyed kids from one street over.

Take some time to explore the stories of the Blyth Festival. You will surely find good art for good people.
