2010 Season

Bordertown Cafe

June 30 - August 14

WRITER(S): Kelly Rebar
DIRECTOR: Katherine Kaszas

Premièred in Blyth in 1987, Kelly’s play has now established itself as a Canadian classic.  In addition to Blyth, Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg and Victoria’s Belfry Theatre will produce Bordertown this year.

The bordertown café is home to seventeen-year-old Jimmy, his single mom, and his grandparents. Grandma Maxine, a reluctant immigrant from the States, carries on a loud and sometimes hilarious commentary on our cultural differences as Jimmy and his mother Marlene navigate the difficult waters of teen/parent relations. It is the first day of Jimmy’s final year of high school and his eagerness to attend is dampened by the sudden news that his ne’er-do-well father, a trucker from the States, wants to take his son to a new home in the south. Wise words from Grandpa and wisecracks from Grandma help Jimmy make the toughest decision he’s ever faced.
